On Friday night at 7:30 pm the Oscar-nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt, who created some of the most popular short films ever shown at the Cinematheque (among them “Billy’s Balloon,” “Rejected,” and “Ah, L’Amour”), appears in person with a selection of his funny, twisted, stick-figure-filled cartoons. A Q&A will follow the screening. The film portion of AN EVENING WITH DON HERTZFELDT includes the Cleveland premiere of Hertzfeldt’s latest work, the 23-min. “It’s such a beautiful day,” the third and final part of his “Bill” trilogy. (A character named Bill stars in all three movies.) The other two parts of the trilogy, “Everything will be OK” (2006) and “I am so proud of you” (2008; another Cleveland premiere), also will be shown, along with some earlier movies and a few surprises. All films will show in new 35mm prints! Special admission to this show is $12; members and CIA I.D. holders $9; ages 25 & under $7 (with proof of age). Antebellum unfolds against the backdrops of a southern American plantation, a German concentration camp, the world premiere of Gone With The Wind and 1930s Berlin cabarets. Two stories merge as a love affair between two men, one Jewish and the other African-American, bridges time, space and gender. Through juxtaposed realities of Nazi cruelty and Hollywood dreams, this sweeping romance challenges intolerance of race and religion and discrimination on both sides of the Atlantic.

Antebellum is an intense exploration of discrimination written by nationally-recognized playwright Robert O’Hara and directed by CPT Associate Artistic Director Beth Wood.

Part classical chamber piece, part gritty garage ‘happening’, and part drag cabaret; this vintage circus of comic debauchery is based on Frank Wedekind’s revolutionary plays Earth Spirit (1895) and Pandora’s Box (1904). poor little Lulu chronicles the exploits of Lulu – a sexual outlaw in a society riven by lust and greed – who is tossed from man to man, and ultimately lands in the clutches of Jack the Ripper. poor little Lulu is both a cautionary fable and a freewheeling peepshow.

Matthew Earnest is a freelance director who works in many forms—from conventional plays, to creating new works and directing his own literary adaptations and translations.

In 2010 Cleveland Public Theatre produced the premiere of Earnest’s Wanderlust, based on the non-fiction book by Rebecca Solnit which toured to the Ice House Festival in New York. He works independently at theaters around the U.S., and is an associate artist at Germany’s English Theatre Berlin and at the University of Delaware’s PTTP. In 2011, Earnest joined Nicole Perrone to found the Lunar Strategem, an international touring company based in rural West Virginia, that has provided support for CPT’s development of poor little Lulu.

“We wanted to bring Earnest back, because of his vibrant vision and his caring approach to devising new work. He is bold, fun, and sexy, and brings a great energy to the stage for audiences to enjoy,” says Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan.

Argentine Cristobal has stolen the original Charles Darwin manuscripts from rare book libraries around the world. Why? Because he’s convinced he’s the great-great-great-great-bastard-grandson of the father of Natural Selection. As part of his sentence he must deliver a public apology, during which he digresses into a fresh and outrageous take on the evolution of man and the inherent human need to understand his place in society.

Darwinii was commissioned by the American Philosophical Society Museum (APS) and debuted at the 2009 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, where it had a sold out run. Berger is a widely acclaimed playwright, who recently co-wrote the book for the musical adaptation of Spider-Man.

Brett Keyser, a Philadelphia–based performer, writer and director and the recipient of the prestigious Independence Foundation Fellowship for Performing Arts, is coming back to play Cristobal once again after getting reviews such as “Darwinii is one of the most mesmerizing pieces of theater this town has seen in a decade.” ~ Tony Brown, Plain Dealer.

“Those who have seen Keyser in performance can attest to his stunning technique and emotional power. It’s an amazing new script with unexpected twists, masterfully played,” said Raymond Bobgan executive artistic director of CPT.

During CIA’s Creative Continuum, Historian Mark Bassett, CIA Liberal Arts Scholar-in-Residence, will share his research on some of CIA’s most noted African-American alumni. Learn about the trail-blazing portrait artist and interior decorator Charles Sallée and nationally known painter Hughie Lee-Smith (both class of 1938), and the legacy these pioneers left to recent graduates.

This exhibit will be a collection of carefully selected iPhone photos from his daily life in the city. Using the iPhone as if it is an older ‘holga’ style camera, these photos will be shown in a series of 6 x 6 inch black and whites, and projected on the gallery walls digitally during the opening reception. Additionally, the entire collection will be available as a small coffee table book. Signed copies will be available at the We Gallery during the exhibition.
