Akron Art Museum paintings, sculptures and Paula Nadelstern’s kaleidoscope quilts are coming to life in the form of flowers. Akron Garden Club is returning to the museum with Art Blooms! Kaleidoscope 2011, a Garden Club of America (GCA) flower show, with exhibits in floral design, horticulture, photography and botanical jewelry.
GCA flower shows are known for their exceptional floral designs and avant-garde use of flowers. Entries are expected from GCA members in Akron, Cleveland, throughout Ohio and surrounding states.
Highlights will include 20 highly artistic floral designs inspired by works on exhibition at the museum, arrayed throughout the galleries. In addition, there will be 25 classes of seasonal cut horticultural specimens from local gardens, plus potted plants, topiaries, edibles, container gardens and miniature landscapes, displayed in the Beatrice Knapp McDowell Grand Lobby. Eight entries of jewelry and other embellished items made entirely from dried botanical material will be staged in the Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Gallery amid the Flora exhibition.
Some 36 landscape and horticultural photographs of fine-art quality will be shown in the Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation Gallery. A conservation exhibition by the Summit County Metro Park System and the Center for Plant Conservation (located at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis) will educate about preserving the endangered Aconitum noveboracense, Northern Monkshood.
The purpose of the flower show is to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence; broaden knowledge of horticulture, flower arrangement and conservation; and share the beauty of a show with the public. Judging will be by 20-30 accredited GCA judges, who will award ribbons and other honors on September 22.
A fundraising gala amid the flowers will be held the evening of September 23 and is open to the public. Proceeds will benefit the Cascade Locks Park Association and other local restoration, conservation and beautification causes. To receive information about attending the gala, contact email@example.com.
Special flower-inspired exhibitions of art will be concurrently on view, including Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern, and Flora, images from the museum’s collection in a survey of different approaches photographers use to depict the plant world.
Art Blooms! Kaleidoscope 2011 will be open during usual museum operating hours September 22-25. Standard museum admissions fees will apply for viewing the flower show.
