Clay Studio Lab Technician
Art House Inc., a visual arts organization on the westside of Cleveland, seeks a clay artist/ceramic’s student to fill the position of a Clay Studio Lab Technician. The candidate must have a solid training in ceramics. He/she must be community minded and interested in gaining studio management experience. The goal of the position is to provide students with extensive lab experience, studio space and teaching opportunities in lieu of pay. When possible, a small stipend may be offered.
Art House will offer to the Clay Studio Lab Technician use of the ceramics facility, kilns, and studio space. The technician is required to maintain the clay area of the studio facility along with the below designated tasks. If interested and qualified, candidate will have the opportunity to teach and work on community outreach programs.
General Studio Responsibilities
Welcome visitors, and class participants; support clay instructors.
Studio Management-Oversee glaze mixing, clay recycling, kiln loading/unloading and firing, material inventory and ordering, scheduling of firings.
Maintenance of wheels, kilns and tools.
Studio Maintenance-Cleaning the floor and maintaining cleanliness and organization of the studio, including wheels, and kiln area
Classes-Make sure necessary materials are available to instructors and space is prepared weekly for classes
Supplies-Preparing and communicating order for glazes and clay to Program Coordinator
Work with director to create clay studio handbook containing policies and procedures
Skill and Education Requirement:
MFA or equivalent with artistic, technical and disciplinary skills in ceramics.
Excellent communication skills; ability to work both independently and with a small team; problem solver, attention to detail; ability to set priorities and meet deadlines; computer ability; sense of humor and ability to work in an ever changing environment
Strong work ethic (reliable & responsible) and passion/vision for helping the organization improve its ceramics program
Reports to the Director: Amy Craft
10 hours per week
Access to studio space
Teaching one Family Open Studio/class each semester if qualified, (paid)
Materials: Unlimited use of reclaimed clay and limited use of glazes
Free participation in all Art House programs
Individual membership to Northern Ohio Clay and one of these select arts organization-MOCA, CMA, SPACES
