STIRRING THE FIRE :: A Global Movement to Empower Women and Girls

Beginning this First Friday, April 6th, Translations Art Gallery, in conjunction with Soroptomist Internternationl Canton / Stark County, is proud to host a nationally touring exhibit entitled STIRRING THE FIRE :: A Global Movement to Empower Women and Girls. This social documentary photography installation features the work of Phil Borges, the United Nations Photographer for the Committee on Women. Traveling the world, he’s captured powerful portraits of women who have survived genocide, racial violence, sex trafficking, poverty and much more, and who have triumphed on the other side to become leaders and activists in their families, tribes, villlages and communities. The exhibit showcases them and tells their stories as a way of building awareness and catalyzing action for justice around the world. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase prints of the photos or books and catalogues of the images in the exhibit. You can read more about the movement and exhibit here: www.stirringthefire.org.

Surrounding this exhibit are many other community activities – a film premiere, panels, other exhibits, a conference and much more. You can read more about all of these Canton happenings in the attached postcard, on the back side. We strongly encourage you to see the exhibit, and then attend one of our partners’ events.

The exhibit will hang for two months, through May 26th. Gallery hours are 12-5, Wednesday-Saturday, and we are located at 331 Cleveland Avenue NW in downtown Canton. For more general information on the gallery, please check out http://www.translationsart.com or like us on Facebook.
